The Learning Spectrum is proud to introduce Lynne Kirby at TLS’s new art teacher!
Although the full time art teacher position is new to TLS, Lynne is a familiar face to many TLS students, families and employees. She started working with TLS Central last spring teaching a component of the C.I.R.C.L.E. Saturday program. When the opportunity arose to develop a visual arts program at TLS, she jumped at the chance.
Lynne has lived in central Ohio her whole life, and received a bachelor of fine arts in painting, drawing and graphics from The Ohio State University. She provided graphic design services to local architects, printing companies and promotions firms before starting her own graphic design company called Studio A, Inc. She grew her own business for over 20 years, then returned to The Ohio State University to earn her MA in art education in 2010. Her thesis was entitled Puppetry in the Classroom, following a passion close to her heart.
Her art teaching career began at a private school near Columbus, teaching art to nearly 300 students from Pre K to grade 12. She used her interest in puppets and all forms of art in her curriculum design. She took courses at Puppeteers of America conferences in puppet therapy, and began using puppets as a tool to help children with varied disabilities. Following this lead, she began working on Saturdays teaching art workshops for children on the autism spectrum at TLS.
This led her to study art and autism online, and she was excited to expand her knowledge of ASD and the best practices to reach and teach children on the spectrum. She believes every child has a right to enjoy all that art can bring to life, and she looks forward to organizing art shows, and teaching drawing, painting ceramics and much more.
Lynne has a grown son who is an executive chef at “Brine” in Newburyport, Massachusetts. He is opening a new restaurant in Boston. He is the light of her life. She is also interested in gardening, painting for fun, cats, art books, music theater and traveling.
We welcome Lynne, and look forward to working with her in her new role!
