When I was in seventh grade, my teacher taught us the whole way to write a letter. It was about writing to a business. We had to pick the business we wanted to write to. Some people got letters or packages back and some people didn’t, but we still learned how to do it. When I became a teacher five years ago, I remembered that lesson and started doing it with my students. I was one of the lucky few who got a letter back. I had my students write these letters for about a month this year.
They learned how to format, write a friendly, but professional letter, and edit. Donatos Pizza, Nintendo, Jack Links Jerky, video game creators (Scott Cawthon- Five Nights at Freddy’s), COSI, Pickerington Police Department, and more were among the places the students wrote.
I always keep a record and photos of who writes back to us for future reference. This year, Donatos wrote back and sent pizza coupons, Nintendo sent a beautiful letter and bookmark, Jack Links sent a great letter with a sticker and coupons, Pickerington Police sent us an amazing letter from the Chief of Police and tons of stickers and magnets, and Scott Cawthon sent an entire package of Five Nights at Freddy’s party supplies and goodies.
Every year I do this project and my students love it!
