March 1 was Employee Appreciation Day! We are celebrating our team members all month long by sharing their stories. Meet Katie Slay, a Teacher Support at The Learning Spectrum’s South campus in Ohio, who is passionate about advocating for her students.

What is your favorite thing about working here?

One of my favorite things about working here is that I get to teach and care for many different students throughout the school. I love helping them to be the best that they can be!

What keeps you coming to work each day?

The students and staff! Watching the students grow academically and behaviorally is incredibly rewarding. I would not be able to do it without the help of our amazing staff!

How do you make an impact on students’ lives?

One way I make an impact on our students’ lives is always advocating for them, even when they aren’t able to advocate for themselves! I will always be there for them no matter what.

Last year, we rolled out our BetterTogether guiding principles. Which one of our values resonates with you most personally and why?

Inclusion! Being inclusive has so many benefits, it allows for social learning and acceptance among our students with autism spectrum disorder.

What does a “day in the life” look like for your role?

Helping the kids with whatever they need throughout the day. Sometimes it’s classroom activities, individualized goals or when they need a break.

Can you talk a little bit about your career trajectory and what led you to where you are now?

I started as a paraprofessional in the classroom when I started two school years ago. I recently accepted a behavior supporting role and I LOVE my new position.

What is something about you that not many people know?

I love playing piano and I’m a huge bookworm!
