autism-awareness-month

All around the world, countless businesses, organizations, political leaders, schools and individuals are recognizing and appreciating the thousands of people affected by autism. That’s because April is Autism Awareness Month.

Started in 1970 by the Autism Society, Autism Awareness Month promotes awareness and acceptance of those individuals and families touched by autism spectrum disorder. It’s celebrated here, across the county, and throughout the world.

On April 2, President Barack Obama issued a White House Proclamation recognizing April 2 as World Autism Awareness Day.

Millions are supporting Light it Up Blue, a global autism awareness campaign, by wearing blue, decorating their businesses blue, or lighting their buildings up blue. Over 16,000 buildings went blue this year alone to shine a light on the autism community, including the Sydney Opera House in Sydney, Australia, Niagra Falls, Rockefeller Plaza, the Empire State Building and the Pyramids of Giza, Egypt.

The Learning Spectrum is celebrating Autism Awareness Month, along with its 10-year anniversary, with events and activities throughout its locations.

Light it Up Blue Family Fun Day – A Frozen-themed event held on April 25 from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. at our Sunbury location, Light It Up Blue Family Fun Day will feature a Frozen sing-along, crafts, face painting, and kiddie karaoke. Learn more (link to blog post)

The 10th Anniversary will feature a silent auction of student artwork and crafts, food and drink, a designated children’s area, and more.

Spirit Weeks and Activities – Throughout our four locations, staff and children are celebrating Autism Awareness month with designated dress up days, special guests, and their very own Light it Up Blue celebrations.

We hope you will join us as we celebrate the children and families we serve!
