The Learning Spectrum has very exciting news! We have been conditionally approved by the Ohio Department of Education to be a charter school in the state of Ohio! At this time, TLS has been approved for our Central location, and for our Kindergarten class. HOWEVER, we were told during our recent site visit that we can turn in our curriculum for additional grades when they return for the final walkthrough in September. It is an easy process to add additional grade levels as an addendum to our charter with no further visits or paperwork. We plan to have the curriculum ready for 1st -12th at that time.

Furthermore, they shared that we have done all the hard work needed to have our compliance plan approved, and we can turn in our applications for our other Johnstown and Canal Winchester locations and expect to have them approved quickly next year. If you see Angela Dinovo, our Director of Employee Relations, thank her for doing an excellent job on completing our compliance plan!

Below are some answers to questions you might have regarding what this will change for us and your child next year:

Will I still have to register as a homeschooler? NO, once TLS is fully chartered, you will not have to register as a homeschooler in the state of Ohio.

Will I be eligible to receive transportation? Yes, if you live within 30 miles of the TLS location your child attends, you are eligible for transportation or a transportation stipend. You can call your district to work this out with them, and all eligible Kindergarteners at Central for next year should begin this process immediately. We will let everyone know as soon as the additional grade levels are approved. *This does not apply to preschool aged students.

Does this affect my JP or AS scholarship? No, your scholarships are treated just as they were before and all testing requirements are the same.

Can my typical child attend TLS? Yes, we have always accepted typical peers in preschool and Kindergarten, but this opens the door to older peers being able to attend TLS and receive a diploma. We will accept typically developing peers as space allows, on a first come first served basis.

Will my child receive a diploma from TLS? Yes, once we are chartered through high school, this allows your child to receive a diploma once they have completed the credits necessary.

Does this change the school day times or any other requirements for my child? No, this does not change anything as TLS already met all of the attendance requirements before being approved for the charter status.

For questions, or additional information regarding TLS’ charter process, please contact your school’s Director.
