Kids enjoyed an evening of fun at the PTO’s first Parents Night Out on December 8.

TLS Canal is in the beginning stages of forming a Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO), and parents are excited for this opportunity to appreciate the staff members for all of their hard work.

Sarah Ehler is the PTO’s president, Avonne Bennett is treasurer and Ann Calhoun is secretary. Audra Miliken and Shelly Ehmann from TLS actively support the group, and all parents are invited and encouraged to get involved. The PTO meets the second Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m., and January’s meeting will be at The Olive Branch in Canal. They are actively looking for new members — parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles are welcome — and have a few key roles left to fill.

By developing a PTO, parents hope to encourage as much family engagement and participation as possible. They hope to be a place for parents to connect with one another and for support groups to be formed. Along with support and encouragement, the PTO would like to plan fun events such as community outings that families can enjoy together.

Planning fundraisers to help staff and students have a happier, fuller and easier school year will be another goal of the PTO. They’d like to plan unexpected appreciation events for the staff that have played such a key role in the students’ lives.

The first PTO sponsored event was a Parents Night Out, held on December 8. Since every parent deserves a break, the PTO encouraged parents to sign their children up for a night of fun and games with TLS staff. The kids had a blast and definitely wore out the staff! The PTO looks forward to hosting another Parents Night Out soon. Pictures of the evening are provided below.

It only takes one special bond between a child and an educator to make a child love school. It could be a bond between a teacher, therapist, or even an administrator.  TLS has gone above and beyond to find the best educators and supporters for our children, and the PTO is a great way to give back.
