2008 Fall Programs

The Learning Spectrum is excited to again offer fun, safe and
inclusive programs for children with ASD and related needs. For those of
you who are familiar with our classes, you will find some of your old
favorites including “Teen Talk”, and Saturday Social Skills classes back by
popular demand. New weekly classes include a Tuesday evening Pirate class,
small tutoring groups, and peer play groups. As always we will continue to
provide individualized intervention services, which can be a great way to
ensure your child will continue to be successful in school and the
community. Below you will find a brief explanation of each class, along
with days and times they will meet, as well as a preference form for
individualized session schedules. Please sign up soon - space is limited!

Peer
Play Groups (ages 3-18)
Our Peer Play Groups are based on the Integrated Play Groups model and
focus on building play and social skills through peer interaction and play.
Each group is composed of one child on the spectrum and 2-3 peers from the
child's natural environment. Trained play guides facilitate play based on
your child's specific interests. Detailed evaluation of the child's play
skills and initial assessment are assessed. Groups meet one hour per week.
One consult with that includes an evaluation of the child's play skills and
report detailing progress and play style for the six week session is
included.
Cost
Special Needs: 6 week session (1 hour/week and consults) $250
Peer Models: 6 week session (1 hour/week) No cost
Autism
Demystification Presentations (ages 2-18)
Based
on the That's What's Different About Me program, our Autism demystification
presentations are designed to inform other children and adults involved in
your child's life about autism with out singling out or identifying your
child. The programs are focused on decreasing social isolation and
increasing acceptance of differences. Presentations are structured for
classrooms and other community settings. They include puppet play and hands
on reinforcement for younger children as well as a sensory stimulation game
for older children and teens. Cost will be determined based on program
hours and group size.

Weekday programs:
Toddlers (ages 2-4)
Social
Play Groups
This group is designed to help children on the spectrum
learn the skills necessary to participate in classroom and group instruction
using techniques such as visual supports and classroom behavior plans. The
children work together along with our staff to develop social and
communication skills while exploring different thematic units to enrich
their learning experience.
Cost: Special Needs = $320.00/month, Peer Models =
$150.00/month

Preschool (ages 4-6)
Preschool
Social Skills Groups
This group
will take place 3 days a week allowing children to form group and friendship
ties. The group will include group circle time, play schedule rotations,
pre-kindergarten skills, and group snack time. The center-based environment
will help to prepare children to transition to a school, daycare, or
kindergarten setting.
Cost: Special Needs = $480.00/month, Peer Models =
$250.00/month

Elementary (ages 6-10)
After School Tutoring Groups:
One day per week
(M-Th) 4:00-5:30
This class offers a small group of students to focus on
both social skills and research a topic of interest for academic skills.
Each week, the students will concentrate on an important social aspect for
one half of the class and the second half will consist of collecting their
research findings for their project. By combining social and study skills
together, students will be able to collaborate with one another as they
organize their information to complete their project at the end of the eight
weeks. Such social skills include: friendships, understanding others, body
language, expressions, handling teasing, conflict resolution and more.
These groups will start the week of September 22nd.
**Each group will have a limit of 2-3 children.
Cost: 6 week session (1 day/wk) $180.00, 6 week session (2
days/wk) $360.00
Elementary Social Skills Groups
Our elementary social skills groups are designed to
help teach the social skills needed to successfully participate in social
situations. We will become “Space Travelers” this fall as we navigate the
social world through participating in six sessions that target areas such as
developing self-esteem, understanding/recognizing emotions and feelings in
our selves and others, and further developing our self-regulation skills to
help manage behavior in group settings.
Cost: Special Needs: $250.00, Peers: $50.00
Middle/High School (ages 10-18)
Teen Talk
This group will meet once a week to work on social
skills issues with peers. Teens will be given the opportunity to engage in
activities designed to teach social understanding, develop an understanding
of emotions and feelings in themselves and others, and learn how
self-regulation and goal setting can help with behavior management. Video
modeling, group activities and social groups will be a part of each class.
Cost: $180.00/6 week session, $90.00/3 week session
Saturday Groups:
Preschool Art and Movement Classes
This class gives students the opportunity to
participate in sensory art & movement activities within a group environment.
The group will have a theme they follow each week. Movement activities will
be geared to help provide sensory input & practice calming through yoga
movements. Art will provide sensory input in a fun environment. The group
environment will work towards helping kids participate effectively in these
types of activities.
Cost: $250.00 Peers: $50.00
Preschool Social Skills Group
Our preschool social skills groups are designed to help
teach the basic social skills needed to successfully participate in social
situations. We will become “Pretend Players” this fall as we navigate the
social world through participating in six sessions that target areas such as
developing pretend play skills, understanding emotions and feelings,
enhancing our communication skills and developing self-regulation skills to
help manage behavior.
Cost: $250.00 Peers/$50.00

opportunity to participate in sensory and movement activities within a group
environment. The group will have a theme they follow each week. Movement

environment.

Please note that The Learning Spectrum accepts Autism
Scholarship funds for all classes and individualized services that are covered
on your student’s IEP goals.
