STAT (Screening Tool for Autism) Screenings

The Screening Tool for Autism in Two-Year-Olds (STAT) was developed by Dr. Wendy Stone of Vanderbilt University's TRIAD center. The STAT is a level 2 screening tool that is designed to not only distinguish children at risk for Autism from the general population, but also from those with other developmental delays. It consists of 12 interactive, play-based items that evaluate children's skills in the areas of motor imitation, communication, and play. the STAT is intended for use with children ages 24 to 36 months of age, and takes less that 20 minutes to administer.

Some may question why it is important to screen for Autism rather than directly referring for an overall evaluation. The creators of the STAT cite long waiting lists for comprehensive diagnostic evaluations as a hindrance in getting children the services they need at a young age. The STAT may help parents begin navigating the road to education, funding, and specialized services for their child as soon as possible.

The Learning Spectrum offers certified administrators of the STAT screening tool. We are available to meet with children and families at our center for screenings and extend an invitation to local pediatricians to provide service within your offices. Each screening appointment includes a parent interview, administration of the STAT, discussion of observation, and a written follow-up report.

The Learning Spectrum is prepared to offer assessment of your child to determine strengths and weaknesses. Treatment goals will be guided by data collected from the assessments. The overall goal is to help your child develop the skills needed to be as independent and successful as possible.
